The Chemistry and Soil Research Institute (CSRI) falls under the Department of Research and Specialist Services (DRSS) in the Ministry of Agriculture, Mechanization and Irrigation Development (AMID). It comprises the Pedology and Soil Survey section, the Crop Nutrition section, Soil Productivity Research Laboratory and Legume Inoculant Factory in Marondera, the Special Analysis Laboratory and the General Analytical Laboratory.

The Institute has a dual function; that of carrying out analytical services in support of agricultural production and that of performing its own research activities to generate and improve the technology needed in the service functions. The Institute also acts as the Government’s regulating agency for the registration and inspection of fertilisers and farm feeds.

The institute is equipped with well equipped Laboratories in support of the agricultural and environmental industry. The institute hosts a commercial production factory of rhizobium inoculants used in growing of legumes mainly soyabean.


Chemistry and Soil Research Institute is located along Fifth Street Extension opposite the Royal Harare Golf Club. The building is opposite the DRSS Head Office under which it falls.


The institute hosts highly qualified and motivated research and support staff. The hierarchy of the staff is illustrated below. The highest is the Head of the institute who coordinates and decides on all the research activities and administrative issues of the institute.
