NUA45
A very early maturing (85 – 90 days) bean cultivar of the calima market class that was released in 2010.This cultivar is one of the first generation of biofortified bean variety to be released in Africa.The cultivar has a yield potential of 2.9t/ha and is widely adapted, having been released regionally (Malawi, Swaziland and Zambia).NUA45 easily shatters therefore should be harvested as soon as the pods and leaves turn yellow.This cultivar also has good canning qualities and contains reasonable quantities of micronutrients (iron and zinc). NUA45 produces a thick soup and the seed swells almost twice their size when cooked. The recommended seeding rate for NUA45 is 100kg/ha. It is a first choice bean cultivar for feeding schemes at schools and hospitals. Because of the mandatory food fortification, the demand for NUA45 from the canning industry is expected to increase significantly in the near future.
