Migratory Pests

PPRI is mandated by the Zimbabwean government to control these migrant pests wherever there is an outbreak. Migratory pests such as Quelea birds (Quelea quelea), Red Locust (Nomadacris septemfasciata), Armyworm (Spodoptera exampta), African Migratory Locust (Locusta migratoria migratoriodes) and Rodents (Mus musculus and Rattus spp) are a major problem to Zimbabwean farmers.

The institute works closely with other government departments such as AGRITEX and the National Parks in the management of these migratory pests. In addition PPRI also works in conjunction with other regional bodies such as International Red Locust Control Organization for Central and Southern Africa (IRLCO-CSA) in the management of the red locust.
